1キロ車で走るとGoogleの検索1000回分のCO2が排出される
ハーバード大の物理学者Alex Wissner-Grossが「Googleで2回検索するとやかんでお湯を沸かすのと同じ量のCO2が排出されるよ」と言ったのをTimesが報道したのに対して

Googleが「いやいや1キロ走る間に1000回も検索できるよ」と返した話．
In terms of greenhouse gases, one Google search is equivalent to about 0.2 grams of CO2. The current EU standard for tailpipe emissions calls for 140 grams of CO2 per kilometer driven, but most cars don't reach that level yet. Thus, the average car driven for one kilometer (0.6 miles for those of in the U.S.) produces as many greenhouse gases as a thousand Google searches.

こういう比較というのはGoogleで検索する代わりにこれを利用すると排出量が少なくなるよとか，人間の1日の活動においてこれくらいCO2が排出されていてGoogleの検索による割合がこんなにも大きいよとか示すのならよくわかるのだが，お湯を沸かすとか車の運転とかと比較しても意味がないのでは…先にそのような例えを出してきた方が悪いのだと思うけど．
また，1回の検索で排出されるCO2をWissner-Grossは7gとしているのに対してGoogleは0.2gと計算している．彼がどう計算しているのかよくわからんのだが，Googleによると検索が速いのでそんなに排出されないよということらしい．Timesの記事だと多くのマシンに分散するのでそれだけ消費電力がかかると書かれていて，それによって個々のマシンの計算時間が短くなることは無視されているのが微妙．

そもそもWissner-Grossはやかんうんぬんの例えについて発言しておらずTimesの誤報だと主張しているみたい
